The dark streaks running down your shingles are not dirt and they are not stains. They are a living blue-green algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and it feeds on the limestone filler in modern asphalt shingles. Left alone it spreads, holds moisture against the roof, and shortens the life of the shingle it is sitting on.
A pressure washer will absolutely take it off, along with the protective granules your shingles depend on, which is how people turn a cleaning into a roof replacement. We use the soft-wash method every major shingle manufacturer endorses: no pressure at all, just a professional treatment applied from a safe angle that kills the organism outright and lets rain carry the residue away over the following weeks.

Will this hurt my shingles or void my warranty?
The opposite. Soft washing is the method published in the ARMA (Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association) guidance, and pressure washing is what actually voids shingle warranties. We never put pressure on a roof.
Why do the streaks not disappear immediately?
On most roofs they do lighten dramatically the same day. The organism is killed on contact, and the last of the dead residue rinses off with the next few rains. Very heavy lichen can take a couple of weeks to fully release.
How long until the streaks come back?
Typically four to six years, depending on shade and tree cover. It is far and away the cheapest thing you can do to extend the life of a roof.
Is my landscaping safe?
Yes. Everything under the drip line gets saturated with clean water before we start and rinsed again after. Roof work gets the most thorough plant protection of any job we do, because there is more runoff to manage.
